We've simply decided we don't want to install a product where the failure mode, if installation or maintenance slips, is core swelling and edge deterioration in this specific climate.
Vinyl Siding
Vinyl is inexpensive and low-maintenance in the sense that it doesn't need painting. But it's a thin plastic product that expands and contracts significantly with temperature swings, can crack in impact or under UV embrittlement over the years, and — critically for a salt-air area — traps moisture behind it if the water-resistive barrier and flashing details underneath aren't done perfectly, since vinyl itself isn't a structural or fully sealed skin.
